In the 1800 Census for Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the name is spelled Mackelroy.
All that we know of John McElroy is from Jane E. Hall (Mrs Carth Hall), who's husband is descended from Isaac Hall and Sarah Ann McElroy. John McElroy is the patriarch of the family in America, as far as we know. Born in Ireland, John is believed to have arrived in America in 1798, with his wife, Elizabeth and three children. They settled in Bullskin Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania. This township is in the western slope of the foothills of the Alleghenys, in western Pennsylvania. Incidentally, at that time and place, bullskin meant buffalo hide.
As mentioned above, in the 1800 Census for Bullskin Township, the name is spelled Mackelroy. In the 1810 Census, Elizabeth is head of household, and still in Bullskin Township. We can assume, based on the birth date of his last child, that John died between 1808 and 1810.I recently found evidence that a John McElroy of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, acquired land from the Steubenville Land Office ( Steubenville, Ohio), in 1805.The land was identified as Section 9, Township 14,Range 4,432 58 FY. The"FY" was the abbReviation for Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and indicated the purchaser's residence.
In 1811, the family moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, and probably to Franklin Township. Between 1837 and 1840, Elizabeth died. We don't know Elizabeth's birth date, but she was " 26-45" in the 1800 Census;"45 & over" in the 1810 Census, and also in the 1820 Census; she was "60-70" in the 1830 Census. Thus her birth date would have been between 1760 and 1770.
In the 1800 Census, John Mackelroy has six children. We know the names of three, Joseph, Hugh W., and John. In the 1810 Census there are seven children, five males and two females. Four children were born between 1800 and 1810, two of whom were Thomas and James.
The family remained in Columbiana County for twenty-plus years. There is a direct reference to Elizabeth, and her son Hugh W. in the book, History of Columbiana County and Representative Citizens, edited and compiled by William B. McCord. This book, in making reference to early settlers, states," Their nearest neighbors were Hugh McElroy and his mother ( a widow), who settled in Section 9 prior to 1815."
In 1836, Hugh W., John and Thomas, all moved to Hardin County, Ohio. Not all of Elizabeth's children left Columbiana County when she died. Joseph and perhaps Elizabeth and Margaret stayed behind. Joseph McElroy and a James McElroy both appear in the 1830 Census for Unity Township, Columbiana County. Margaret and her husband, William Morrison moved to Hancock County, Ohio in 1837. See Brown's, History of Hancock County.
